Dylan’s Death

Cymraeg

Much is written and documented about the circumstances of Dylan’s death in America in November 1953. It was a tragic death exacerbated by over- indulgence of drinking and living the poets’ life. Caitlin said that America ate Dylan up and played to all his weaknesses and did little to preserve the poet they feted so much.

Dylan was probably one of the first tragic deaths caused by fame and celebrity and ensured his prophecy of any early death came true.

Dylan’s life was one of accepting generosity of strangers and friends and such was the case of the generosity of President Jimmy Carter, who on a visit to Westminster Abbey asked why there was no memorial to Dylan Thomas in Poets’ Corner?.

It seemed that the omission had been due to his misspent life, as had the omission of Shelly and Byron due to their impropriety. Jimmy Carter a born - again Christian rectified the omission by paying for Dylan’s memorial in Poets’ Corner.

Dylan Thomas is buried in Laugharne his grave marked by a simple white cross inscribed with the words: In memory of Dylan Thomas died Nov 9 1953 RIP.
